Rusty rugby on show after winter break

Report by Dan Taylor

On a cold and windy January Saturday Dyce RFC hosted Inverness CD and fell to a narrow loss in the closing stages of a scrappy match.

The home team kicked off with the Inverness side on the receiving end of the start. The game started quickly with the kicking game from the visiting team putting the home side on the back foot, who struggled to organise themselves against a well-practiced opposition.

The continued bombardment of the home side's 22m meant that the strong and organised Inverness team came close to scoring a try after a line out mall which resulted in a held up try. The game continued with both sides having plenty to show in a grueling first half with fast paced play and plenty of changes in momentum.

Not long after, the Dyce team took a chance to get some points on the board with Duncan Scott attempting a penalty kick on the edge of his range; his attempt sadly falling short with the game picking up quickly after bouncing under the posts.

The Dyce team finally managed to gain some momentum towards the middle of the first half giving the home side a chance to put some points on the board, David Hay narrowly missing the first penalty but making the second around the 25-minute mark.

The rest of the first half continued with both sides having moments of clarity as well as frantic play. Both scrums showing that they were there to win with both teams having plenty to show. The second half finishing on a sour note for the home team, while being within spitting distance of the try line only to have Ollie Howard dive for the line and unfortunately get held up.

The second half started with both teams looking for the win still with everything to play for. The second half started much like the first with some quick play and the home side forcing some offloads and causing a small lack of organisation within the offensive attack. With a strong visiting defense, the game remained going back and fourth over the half way line with Dyce trying desperately to get the win they wanted.

With a chance to increase the lead coming around the 55-minute mark. Once again David Hay took it upon himself succeeding to increase to score to 6-0 with the game still in the balance. The game started once again with a long and brutal attack with several phases coming from the Inverness side. ICD managed to break the line of defense of the exhausted home side resulting in a try, bringing the score to 7-6 in the 70th minute of the game.

The second half finished with the visiting side using their new-found momentum to their advantage coming hard and fast at the Dyce team who managed to just about hold off the ICD team until the final minutes with a long and arduous game resulting with both sides tired and bruised.
