Despite loss, Dyce pick up first league points of the season

Dyce travelled up to wintry conditions at Fraserburgh with squad well-balanced between new blood and old heads.

After a minute silence to commentate a loss experienced by the Fraserburgh club, the match was underway.

Dyce headed straight into the Fraserburgh 22 where a combination of pick-and-go, midfield crashes and tactical kicking kept Fraserburgh pinned back. Dyce set pieces were also much improved with solid scrums and a dominant line out securing plenty of possession.

Keen to put points on the board several promising moves and line breaks were let down by a few unfortunate handling errors. Finally, after working the blind side for a few phases, Dyce switched direction and put Danny MacGregor through a gap and a grasping tackle to score just to the side of the uprights. David Hay converted and took the lead Dyce 0 - 7.

A cheap clear out of influential half back Gregg Jack from the back of the ruck, and then a head knock to Callum Robertson saw Dyce having to restructure their back line and front row. Despite this Dyce maintained the pressure for most of the half, though Fraserburgh pressed into the Dyce 22 for the last 5 minutes. Dyce were able to hold out with strong defence, despite conceding several penalties close to the line.

HT: Fraserburgh RFC 7 - 0 Dyce RFC

Dyce started the second half as they did the first, and continued to dominate territory courtesy of strong ball running and a few lineout steals.

Confident of pushing on for their first victory of the season. David Hay kept the scoreboard ticking over with two penalties, increasing the lead to 0 -10 then 0 -13.

Fraserburgh had other ideas though, and found a second wind as Dyce began to tire. Fraserburgh began to dominate breakdowns and get over the gain line. Desperate defence from Dyce held of an onslaught but eventually Fraserburgh pushed through to score twice in 10 minutes and convert both. Closing the gap to 7 - 13 then taking the lead 14 - 13.

Dyce fought back but were unable to maintain enough territory or possession to pressure the Fraserburgh line. Fresh, experienced legs helped the home team return deep in to Dyce territory and soaked up time with a strong series of pick and drive phases, before spreading wide and crashing through two Dyce defenders to seal the game with an unconverted try.

FT: Fraserburgh RFC 19 - 13 Dyce RFC

A losing bonus point (their first of the season) did little to soften the disappointment of losing a game that was there to win.

In a fortnight's time Dyce RFC welcome Huntley RFC to the Central Park Pitches on Sat 24th March in what is likely to once again be a feisty affair given the outcome of the last meeting between the two clubs earlier in the season. Hope you can join us there to support us from the sidelines.
